The 39th Annual Meeting of the AANS/CNS Section on Pediatric Neurological Surgery will be held in America's heartland, Cleveland, Ohio, from Tuesday, November 30 through Friday, December 3. The venue is the beautiful Renaissance Hotel at Cleveland’s historic Tower City Center, just steps away from great restaurants and attractions. The spotlight this year is on Quality Improvement initiatives and the meeting’s theme, Better Outcomes,Brighter Futures, will be presented in a series of provocative talks by leading experts in the nation. Some of the featured speakers at this year’s meeting are:
Peter W. Carmel, MD, President-Elect of the American Medical Association (AMA), the nation’s largest and most influential physician organization. Dr. Carmel is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) and an internationally renowned pediatric neurosurgeon. Dr. Carmel has received many honors recognizing his contributions to organized neurosurgery including the 2008 Distinguished Service Award from the American Association of Neurological Surgeons.
James T. Rutka, MD, PhD, President of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons. Dr. Rutka is Chairman of the Division of Neurosurgery at the University of Toronto and co-director of the Arthur and Sonia Labatt Brain Tumour Research Centre. He has received numerous honors including the Grass Award from the Society of Neurological Surgeons, and has served as the Honored Guest at the Congress of Neurological Surgeons Annual Meeting in 2009.
Richard C. Karl, MD, this year’s Raimondi Lecturer, will speak about The Prevention of Operative Errors. Dr. Karl is a nationally-recognized cancer surgeon, a 737-type rated airline pilot, an acclaimed author, an outstanding speaker and former Professor and Chairman of the Department of Surgery at the University of South Florida College of Medicine. As founding director of the Surgical Safety Institute, he has spoken nationally on crew resource management, focused communication and teamwork to improve outcomes in the operating room.
Avroy A. Fanaroff, MD, this year’s SONS Lecturer, will speak about the Future of Neonatology. The Section On Neurological Surgery (SONS) of the American Academy of Pediatrics Lecture is given by a renowned AAP colleague outside the field of Neurosurgery. Dr. Fanaroff is an international authority on neonatology and Chairman Emeritus of Pediatrics at Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital. He has received many honors including the Apgar Award, the Professional Education Award, and the National Education Award from the AAP. He has co-edited the leading textbook in neonatology, Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine, which is now in its 8th Edition.
